When the universe was started only hydrogen (H) was present. But when stars were formed due to the fusion occurring in them, hydrogen fused into helium (He). Similarly helium fused into other heavier atoms and then the heavy atoms fused to form iron (Fe). After this fusion didn't occur because there wasn't enough energy. But when the star exploded the iron atoms met the energy and fused into some of the heaviest atoms known i.e. gold (Ag) & platinum (Pt).
